In this latest edition of our Crypto Mythbuster series with The Nation, we look at how users can stay safe while using Crypto this festive season.
It is often said that when a deal seems too good to be true, it probably is. Trusting our instincts is crucial, especially in light of possible scams. As the festive season approaches, there is a noticeable uptick in fraudulent activity, with fraudsters looking to take advantage.
Of those who were scammed, 53 percent of respondents were convinced that the offer was legitimate because the website looked genuine.
Therefore, it is essential to pause and exercise caution during online transactions. Learning to identify red flags is essential. Committed to protecting the global virtual-asset ecosystem, Binance has shared insights into common Crypto scams, along with ways to avoid them.
Common cryptocurrency scams
1. Social media giveaway scams
Social media platforms often offer giveaways by crypto companies or influencers. Some may request your card details as a condition of releasing the giveaway. Legal gifts never ask for funds or bank details in advance. Examine profiles carefully; fake profiles often have clear differences. Even if Binance or any legitimate entity offers a giveaway, they will not initially ask for funds.
2. Pyramid and ponzi schemes
Amidst the festive feeling, be wary of schemes that promise guaranteed profits. These schemes promise guaranteed profits, a typical red flag. Ponzi schemes disguise themselves as portfolio management services, but they rely on new investors to pay existing ones. Pyramid schemes involve recruitment and fees, which circulate money within the structure. Beware of high returns within a short period of time.
While you are celebrating, scammers may try to extract personal data through various mediums such as phone, email or fake websites. They can also pretend to be employees of your trusted cryptocurrency companies spreading the festive spirit. Be extra vigilant this season. Legitimate exchanges like Binance will never ask for your password unsolicited. When in doubt, reach out through official channels listed on their website.
4. Scam shopping sites
With the season of giving upon us, be wary of fake e-commerce sites impersonating legitimate retailers. Always check the URL for authenticity and be wary of significantly lower prices on popular items. Avoid providing personal details on suspicious websites.
Additional security tips from Binance
Embrace the festive spirit, but also use two-factor authentication (2FA) for your exchange accounts. As you decorate your home, you should update passwords regularly and use strong, unique passwords for each platform. Just as you would protect your home during this season, protect your online presence. Beware of phishing attempts; Binance will never ask for your password. As to cherish cherished moments, bookmark Binance’s official website and avoid clicking on suspicious links or ads. Always make sure to use the official communication channels for inquiries and/or verifications such as the Binance Support Center in this season’s festivities and beyond.
Let’s navigate this festive crypto ecosystem wisely. If you suspect that you are being targeted by a scam, cease communication, stop transfers and report to Binance Support immediately. Providing evidence and materials can help us help you effectively.
